About this piece
This artwork is inspired by the long history of clowns and circus performers, where artists for centuries have used bright yellows, blues, reds, blacks, and greens to capture their world. The clown universe is entertaining, funny, colorful, and full of exaggerated expressions—but it also carries a deeper message. Behind the joy and excitement, the circus world can be overwhelming, even addictive, drawing people into a fantasy that sometimes distances them from reality. Too much entertainment can lead us into other motives and distractions, making us forget that we live in a collective, real world, not just a world of illusion. Through these colors and characters, this artwork reflects both the charm and the caution of entertainment: its ability to uplift us, inspire us, but also to pull us too far away if we lose balance.
Motivation
I was motivated to draw this piece after thinking for a long time about how hands, minds, and thoughts work together in creativity. I also reflected on how clowns perform—how they entertain, how they use their gestures, movement, and energy on stage, and how they adapt to different atmospheres just to survive and stay in their profession. I felt the best way to bring all of this together was through natural and common colors, blending them to show the combination of effort, expression, emotion, and entertainment in one unified artwork.__ Russell Mihindukula
Story behind the artwork
In this artwork, I show two people—each on opposite sides—dressing up and covering themselves as clowns. No matter how much they paint their faces or hide behind costumes, their true inner spirit and motives still remain, shining through their expressions and actions. My expectation is for viewers to become more understanding, more alert, and more aware of people who mask themselves behind entertainment. Even when someone covers their real face, their true intentions are always present.
