Throughout life, I have noticed how often people judge others—at work, on public transport, at family gatherings, among friends, within relationships, and sometimes even within their own homes. It seems that for many people, judgment becomes a daily habit. We focus on the faults of others while often overlooking our own shortcomings. The exaggerated eyes, intense facial expressions, angular forms, and compressed composition are my visual representation of constant observation and scrutiny. The faces appear to watch, question, and examine one another, creating an atmosphere of tension and self-reflection. My inspiration also comes from biblical teachings. One passage that resonates deeply with the message of this artwork is: Artist Reflection "Through this work, I wanted to transform an everyday human habit into a visual conversation. The eyes watch, the faces observe, and the forms overlap, creating a world where judgment is constant. Yet beneath that tension lies a deeper message: before looking at the faults of others, we should take the time to understand our own. Motivation
My hope is that viewers will pause and ask themselves an honest question: How often do I judge others without fully understanding their story? Every person carries struggles, fears, challenges, and experiences that may not be visible on the surface. What appears obvious from the outside is rarely the complete picture. This artwork is not intended to accuse or condemn. Instead, it is an invitation to reflect upon our own humanity. Before pointing a finger at another person, perhaps we should first examine ourselves with the same honesty. I hope viewers leave with a greater sense of empathy, understanding, and compassion. If this painting encourages even one person to replace criticism with kindness, or judgment with understanding, then it has achieved its purpose. Story behind the artwork
"Do not judge, or you too will be judged." — Matthew 7:1 (NIV) These teachings remind us that self-reflection should come before criticism of others. The palette of greys, blacks, whites, and subtle red undertones was inspired by the colours I observed during dusk walks through the Botanical Gardens in Berwick.
