Artist Statement Russell Mihdukula Kuveni – The Yaksha Queen As an artist, I am continually inspired by stories that have survived the passage of time, and few figures have fascinated me more than Kuveni, (#Kuvenipainting) the legendary Yaksha Queen of Sri Lanka. Her beauty, strength, mystery, and enduring presence in the cultural memory of the island have inspired me to create this deeply personal artwork. For centuries, Kuveni's story has been told and retold (#Kuvenipainting). Long after my own time, I believe people will continue to speak of her, reflect upon her character, and be captivated by her place in Sri Lankan history and folklore. Through this artwork, I wanted to offer my own interpretation of her spirit, personality, and presence. My artistic approach has been shaped by years of study, travel, observation, and immersion in art (#Kuvenipainting). My artistic experiences extend through Italy, France, and Spain, where I spent countless hours exploring museums, galleries, historic collections, and cultural landmarks. I studied the works and methods of many of the world's great masters, learning not only from their paintings but from their dedication to understanding a subject before committing it to canvas (#Kuvenipainting). I was particularly inspired by the discipline of artists who carefully studied character, form, symbolism, and narrative before introducing colour, light, and background into their compositions. Through these experiences, I developed my own expressive style—one that values emotion, storytelling, symbolism, and individuality over strict realism. The flowers, greenery, cotton fibres, village references, and stylised features are all part of my personal visual language. As an artist, I feel a responsibility and a passion to keep these stories alive through visual expression, allowing them to reach contemporary audiences while preserving their timeless significance(#Kuvenipainting). Kuveni, in particular, represents a fascinating blend of beauty, strength, mystery, and cultural identity.
